HOUSTON, TX – July 10, 2025 – A new era of family partnership is taking shape at the Visual and Performing Arts Academy (VPAA), where parents are stepping into leadership and community-building roles like never before. Southwest Public Schools proudly announces two major parent-focused initiatives: the launch of the school’s first-ever Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and the introduction of the Summer Parent Academy.
Parents Leading the Way: VPAA’s First-Ever PTO
We’re thrilled to announce the formation of VPAA’s very first Parent Teacher Organization! The newly formed PTO unites a passionate group of parents dedicated to strengthening the home-to-school connection, enriching the student experience, and leading with vision and heart.
“I want to be an active part of not only my child’s education, but also the learning journey of all the children on campus. My hope is to help create a school community that feels like family—where everyone is involved, included, and valued,”
— Natzyeli Martínez, PTO President
The PTO has outlined a focused and inspiring agenda for the year ahead, including:
Increasing community involvement and building local partnerships
Beautifying campus spaces such as the playground and cafeteria
Fundraising to support student events, clubs, and organizations
In the words of Principal Virginia Ocanas and Assistant Principal Juanita McCullough, "the future is bright at VPAA—and we’re building it together!"
Summer Parent Academy: Setting Families Up for Success
In addition to launching the PTO, both Southwest Public School elementary campuses—Visual and Performing Arts Academy (VPAA) and International Leadership Academy (ILA)—are hosting Summer Parent Academies to help families kick off the school year with confidence.
These structured orientation sessions simplify the enrollment process and provide families with everything they need to feel prepared. ILA Principal, Ms. Morales, shares that staff members will guide attendees through required documents, explain key processes, and share essential school information to ensure a smooth start to the year.
By building strong, informed partnerships from day one, Southwest Public Schools continues to fulfill its promise of student success through family empowerment.
