Proclamation

Houston, TX - March 5, 2024 - Yesterday marked a significant milestone in the history of Southwest Public Schools as Mayor John Whitmire officially declared March 5, 2024, as Southwest Public Schools Day. This proclamation comes in light of the district’s recent adoption of new campus names, which was announced by Paul Young, Chief of Staff, from Councilmember Edward Pollard’s Office - District J, during Southwest Public Schools’ inaugural State of the Schools event.

Effective January 26, 2024, Southwest Public Schools embraced a new era by redefining its campus identities to reflect its enduring legacy of academic distinction and dedication to the Houston community. The new names underscore unwavering commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and thematic programs.

The newly inaugurated academies include:

• Southwest Public Schools International Leadership Academy

(formerly known as Bissonnet Elementary)

• Southwest Public Schools Visual and Performing Arts Academy (formerly known as Mangum Elementary)

• Southwest Public Schools Leadership and Global Studies Academy (formerly known as Discovery Middle School)

• Southwest Public Schools College and Career Preparatory Academy (formerly known as Empowerment High School)

Mayor Whitmire's declaration of Southwest Public Schools Day serves as a testament to our commitment to preparing students for success in an interconnected world while providing them with the tools to thrive in the 21st century.
